Sunday Sermon Blog: New Thing Coming Pt.3

The Greatest Comeback of All Time

It’s Resurrection Sunday — the most significant day in history. Whether this is your first time at Church in the City or you’ve been here every Sunday for the last 40 years, today we celebrate the moment that changed everything. Over 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ conquered death, rose from the grave, and gave humanity the ultimate choice: life through Him or life without Him.

A Borrowed Tomb, An Eternal Victory

After enduring betrayal, brutal torture, and a criminal’s death on a cross, Jesus was laid in a tomb that didn’t even belong to Him. Matthew 27 tells us it was a brand new tomb, one no one had ever been placed in — a detail that makes the resurrection crystal clear. When the tomb was found empty, there was no mistaking which body was missing. Jesus walked out, alive, declaring victory over sin and death.

When You Understand What You’re Celebrating

I get hyped about sports — ask anyone about my reaction when the Raptors won the championship in 2019! We paraded, we cheered, and we’ll probably talk about it forever. But no earthly celebration compares to what we remember on Resurrection Sunday.

Because when you truly understand what you’re celebrating today, it transforms you. It’s not just a holiday. It’s a declaration that the old ways are gone, and Jesus has made a new way. The Old Testament pointed ahead to this — with sacrifices and laws designed to prepare people for what was coming. But Jesus fulfilled it all. He became the final sacrifice, our High Priest, and the one who bridges the gap between us and God.

New Life, New Purpose

Resurrection power isn’t just something to acknowledge — it’s something to live. Before God touched my heart, my life was driven by anger, bitterness, and self-centeredness. But Jesus exchanged my pain for peace, my hopelessness for joy, and gave me a new purpose.

Romans 6:23 reminds us that the wages of sin is death, but God’s gift is eternal life through Christ Jesus. That’s what Resurrection Sunday is all about. It’s about remembering the price that was paid and the victory that was won.

Hope for the Brokenhearted

Maybe today you feel stuck in a storm or trapped by your circumstances. The truth is — Resurrection power is for you too. God sees you, loves you, and has a plan for your life. Jeremiah 29:11 declares that His plans are to prosper you, not to harm you; to give you hope and a future.

No matter where you’re coming from today, when you understand what you’re truly celebrating on Resurrection Sunday — it creates a new thing in you. A new heart. A new peace. A new identity. And the story of Jesus’ resurrection becomes the story of your resurrection too.
