Sunday Sermon Blog: New Thing Coming pt.2

Isaiah 43:18–19

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

This is what hit me while preparing for Palm Sunday:
Jesus didn’t ride into Jerusalem to overthrow Rome—He came to overthrow sin and death.
And today, the Holy Spirit wants to continue that new thing in you—bringing life, clarity, and power.

What is Palm Sunday?

It’s the day Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem, one week before His resurrection.

All four Gospels share the story. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Jesus approaches Jerusalem, tells two disciples to go get a donkey and her colt—fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9:

“See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey…”

  • The disciples place their cloaks on the donkey, and Jesus rides in.

  • A large crowd lays their cloaks and palm branches on the road—a sign of honor and celebration.

  • They shout: “Hosanna!” which means “Save us!” (Psalm 118:25-26)

It was a public acknowledgment of Jesus as Messiah.

But here’s the turn:
The same crowd shouting "Hosanna!" would, just days later, shout "Crucify Him!"

Palm Sunday is a celebration—but it’s also a calling. So let’s break it down into three points:

1. Lay It Down

Matthew 21:8

“A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.”

They were showing honor and excitement for their King.

But they expected a political revolution. They wanted power, not transformation.

Here’s the thing:
They gave Jesus a moment of celebration, but not a lifetime of surrender.

It's like singing in a choir—your voice might be amazing, but to blend in harmony, you have to lay it down. Surrender the spotlight for the bigger sound.

And just like I once sang “End of the Road” after losing a high school basketball game (don’t judge me!)—my sister said, “Who sings that?” I said, “Boyz II Men.” She said, “Let’s keep it that way.”
She eviscerated me. 😂

Sometimes, we need that kind of reminder. Lay it down.

Romans 8:8-10 says:

“Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God… But if Christ is in you… the Spirit gives life.”

Palm Sunday was about public celebration.
Romans 8 is about private surrender.

Palm branches are temporary.
Daily surrender brings transformation.

💭 Reflection Question: What do you need to lay down so Jesus can truly reign in your life?

2. Don’t Miss the Moment

John 12:16

“At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize…”

The disciples missed it in real time.

It’s like when I was dating Liana—we were at the movies, sharing popcorn. Our hands touched.
And I knewthis was the moment.
So I held her hand… and ate popcorn with the other. 👏🏽😂

Church—don’t miss the moment.

Jesus came with spiritual authority, but the people were looking for military power.

Today, we still miss the moment if we’re not tuned in to the Holy Spirit.

John 16:13

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth…”

💭 Reflection Question: Are your expectations aligned with the Holy Spirit—or your own agenda?

3. Live the Power, Not Just the Parade

Romans 8:11

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you… He will give life to your mortal bodies…”

Palm Sunday started with a parade, but it ended at the cross—and then came resurrection power.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus lives in you. Not just to stir you, but to sustain you.

If you feel lost, broken, hurt, or overwhelmed, remember:

Isaiah 43:18–19

“See, I am doing a new thing!”

📢 Call on His Name:

  • Jehovah Jireh – The Lord who provides

  • Jehovah Nissi – The Lord is my banner

  • Jehovah Rapha – The Lord who heals

  • Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is peace

CHURCH—THIS IS THE MOMENT.

We’re not just here for a Palm Sunday parade.
We’re here to let the King reign in us every single day.

🛑 Lay it down.
🎯 Don’t miss the moment.
⚡ Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.

THERE’S A NEW THING COMING.

Palm Sunday is a celebration—but it’s also a calling.
To treasure God above all else, and to walk in resurrection power every day.
