Sermon Series Blog: When You Just Don’t Get It Pt.1

We’ve all had those moments where we just don’t get it. Maybe it’s a new invention, a confusing technology, or that self-checkout machine that keeps repeating, “Unexpected item in the bagging area!” (Don’t worry — this time, it wasn’t me either.)

But that feeling isn’t new. History is full of people who just didn’t understand what was coming. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, critics said it had “no value.” IBM’s chairman once predicted the world would only need five computers. Even X-rays were dismissed as a hoax when they first appeared!

Sometimes, people miss what they can’t comprehend — and spiritually, the same is true today.

1 Corinthians 2:14 — “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness.”

Without the Holy Spirit, faith looks foolish, truth feels uncomfortable, and love seems impossible. But when God opens our eyes, everything changes.

1. Faith the World Can’t Understand

Thomas doubted Jesus’ resurrection until he could see and touch the evidence. The world says, “Seeing is believing,” but Jesus turned that upside down:

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” — John 20:29

That’s faith the world can’t understand — the kind that builds arks before the rain (like Noah) and looks up to heaven even while being stoned (like Stephen).

Real faith isn’t blind; it’s Spirit-led trust. It believes God’s word even when life doesn’t make sense. The world says, “Prove it first.” The Spirit says, “Trust Me, and then you’ll see.”

2. Truth the World Finds Uncomfortable

Jesus said,

“I am the way and the truth and the life.” — John 14:6

That’s powerful — but also uncomfortable, because truth exposes lies. Jeremiah was mocked for speaking it. Paul was ridiculed for preaching it. Martin Luther risked his life to defend it.

Real love doesn’t avoid truth; it delivers it with compassion. Proverbs 27:6 reminds us:

“Wounds from a friend can be trusted.”

Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is speak truth that sets others free. The Spirit gives us the courage to speak boldly and the wisdom to do it in love.

3. Love and Victory the World Can’t Comprehend

To many, the cross looks like weakness and failure. But 1 Corinthians 1:18 says:

“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Think of Hosea — forgiving and restoring his unfaithful wife because God told him to. The world saw humiliation, but God saw redemption. Love that forgives, faith that endures, and truth that transforms — these are the victories only the Spirit can reveal.

When you love those who hurt you or forgive the unforgivable, the world won’t get it — but heaven celebrates it.

When You Don’t Get It

Maybe you’re walking through a season that just doesn’t make sense. Take heart — the Spirit helps you see what the world can’t.

Through Jesus, faith becomes sight, truth becomes freedom, and love becomes victory.

What the world calls foolish, God calls powerful.
And through the Holy Spirit, you can see His power, His glory, and His hope — even when you just don’t get it.

Reflection

Where in your life do things “just not make sense” right now?
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see God’s purpose beyond what you understand — because even when life feels confusing, His wisdom never fails.
