Living Proof: Standing Strong When God Feels Silent

Church, I have to admit something—I messed up recently. Not a big disaster, but one of those “foot-in-mouth” moments that leave you wondering, What was I thinking? It happened on my 11th wedding anniversary, a day meant for celebration, love, and joy. As I was getting ready, singing James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” in the mirror, I realized I wasn’t actually singing to my wife but to myself. Yep, a little self-confidence moment gone wrong!

That silly story reminds me of a bigger truth—sometimes, even in our best moments, our thoughts and feelings get tangled, and we need rewiring in our hearts and minds. Life can get messy, and faith can feel complicated. But here’s the good news from Psalm 119:81-88: When life feels heavy, when our souls are faint and God seems silent, His Word remains our firm anchor.

Stand on Truth, Not on Feeling

David, the Psalmist, was worn out. His soul was fainting. But notice this: his hope was not in his feelings but in God’s promises. Church, feelings are real but unreliable. Faith is built on God’s unchanging Word—the thermostat that sets the temperature, not the thermometer that just reacts.

When you feel weak, lonely, or anxious, remember the promises of God:

  • “The Lord gives strength to His people” (Psalm 29:11)

  • “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5)

  • “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Anchor your hope in God’s Word, not your emotions.

Pray Honestly—Even Through the Pain

David doesn’t sugarcoat his pain. He asks hard questions: “How long, Lord? When will you comfort me?” Honest prayer is powerful because God welcomes it.

Like Corrie ten Boom, who endured unimaginable suffering yet cried out to God with raw honesty, we too can bring our real feelings to God. Your honest prayers—full of questions, frustration, and tears—are not a sign of weak faith but deep trust.

Trust That Silence Doesn’t Cancel His Promises

Sometimes God seems quiet. Maybe your prayers feel unanswered or your breakthrough delayed. David’s enemies mocked him, but he didn’t give up. He anchored himself in God’s unfailing love.

William Wilberforce, who fought to abolish slavery, waited decades before seeing God’s promise fulfilled. God’s silence is never absence—it’s preparation. Like seeds planted underground, unseen growth is happening.

A Challenge for the Week

Don’t wait to feel close to God to stay faithful. Each morning, declare a promise from Scripture out loud. Each night, write one honest sentence to God—your fears, your hopes, your doubts. At the end of the week, see how God has held you through the silence.

Church, we are not giving up. We are living proof of God’s faithfulness, even when the storms rage and silence surrounds us. Let’s stand on truth, pray honestly, and trust deeply.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
