Sermon Series Blog: Life in His Name Pt.4
The Voice That Changes Everything
When Jesus Speaks, Dead Things Come Alive
We’ve been walking through a series called Life in His Name — and week after week, we’ve seen what happens when people truly encounter Jesus.
A woman at a well went from hiding in shame to boldly telling others, “Come and see.” A desperate father trusted the word of Jesus before he ever saw proof that his son was healed. A paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda experienced not just physical healing, but an entirely new life.
But in John 5, the tension shifts.
Jesus heals a broken man — and instead of celebration, opposition rises. Religious leaders become furious because Jesus healed on the Sabbath. What began as a miracle story suddenly becomes a confrontation about identity, authority, and eternity.
At the center of it all is one powerful question:
What Are You Doing With the Voice of Jesus?
Jesus Is More Than a Good Teacher
One of the most challenging things about Jesus is that He never left room for people to reduce Him to “just a good man.” In John 5, Jesus openly calls God His Father, making Himself equal with God.
That’s why people reacted so strongly to Him.
Jesus didn’t come asking for admiration. He came claiming authority — over religion, culture, sin, life, and eternity itself.
And honestly, that tension still exists today.
Our culture constantly tells us:
“Follow your heart.”
“Live your truth.”
“Do what makes you happy.”
We’re taught to build lives where we remain in control. But real faith means surrendering control and allowing Jesus to become Lord over every part of our lives.
Faith is not inviting Jesus into our story to support our agenda.
Faith is surrendering our lives to His authority.
The Voice of Jesus Brings Life
The beauty of the Gospel is that Jesus does not just expose dead things — He speaks life into them.
In John 5, Jesus declares that just as the Father raises the dead, the Son also gives life. That is an incredible statement. Jesus is not simply offering advice, motivation, or inspiration. He is offering resurrection life.
The reality is, many people are spiritually exhausted.
They keep chasing success, relationships, entertainment, validation, or achievement hoping something will finally satisfy the emptiness inside. But nothing fully fills the soul because we were never designed to live disconnected from the God who created us.
That’s why Jesus says:
“Whoever hears my word… has life.”
Think about Lazarus.
Dead for four days. Buried. Mourned. The story looked finished. But when Jesus stood at the tomb and called his name, death had to move.
That’s the power of the voice of Jesus.
His voice is stronger than shame.
Stronger than addiction.
Stronger than hopelessness.
Stronger than the thing trying to bury you.
One Day Everyone Will Respond to His Voice
Jesus also makes something clear in John 5: one day every person will stand before Him.
Every distraction will fade.
Every excuse will disappear.
Every mask will fall away.
And the question won’t be:
“What did I build for myself?”
The question will be:
“What did I do with Jesus?”
That’s why responding to His voice matters now.
Don’t confuse the patience of God with permission to keep resisting Him.
Jesus Is Still Calling
One of the most beautiful truths in this passage is that Jesus is still speaking. After all our failures, pride, resistance, and wandering — He still calls people to life.
The voice that created life is still calling today.
The question is not whether Jesus is speaking.
The question is:
How are you responding to His voice?
