It Is Finished: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

More Than a Love Story

When people hear the phrase love story, they think of romance, happiness, and everything working out in the end.

But Good Friday tells a different kind of story.

Not a story of romance—
a story of rescue.

It’s the story of a holy God who saw people lost in sin, broken by rebellion, unable to save themselves—and still chose to come for them.

Good Friday is the greatest love story ever told, because at the cross, Jesus showed how far the love of God was willing to go to bring us home.

We Don’t Have It Together—We Know Where to Go

There’s a misconception about Christians—that we have it all together.

We don’t.

We know we’re broken. We know we fall short. We know we struggle.

But here’s the difference:

We know where to go when we do.

Because Jesus is the One who takes broken lives and puts them back together.

The joy we carry isn’t because life is easy.
It’s because in our weakness, we’ve found a Savior who is faithful.

1. He Bore the Full Weight

At the cross, Jesus carried something He did not deserve.

Public shame.
Rejection.
Suffering.

But more than that—He carried our sin.

Not His guilt.
Ours.

Like Isaac carrying the wood up the mountain, Jesus carried the cross—but this time, there was no substitute waiting.

Because Jesus is the substitute.

He stepped under the full weight of what should have crushed us.

Question:
Have you only admired the cross from a distance, or have you trusted the One who carried your weight?

2. He Gave the Full Measure

As Jesus hung on the cross, He said, “I thirst.”

Not because He was distant from the pain—but because He was fully in it.

This wasn’t symbolic.
This wasn’t partial.
This was total surrender.

Even in suffering, He was still giving—caring for His mother, fulfilling Scripture, pouring Himself out completely.

There is no halfway love at Calvary.

God’s love held nothing back.

Question:
If Jesus held nothing back for you, what are you still holding back from Him?

3. He Finished the Full Work

Then Jesus declares:

“It is finished.”

Not a cry of defeat—but a declaration of victory.

The debt—paid.
The sacrifice—complete.
The way back to God—opened.

Every sacrifice in the Old Testament pointed to this moment.

Jesus, the true Lamb, didn’t just cover sin—He dealt with it fully.

The curtain that once said “stay back” has now been torn open.

Now the message is clear:

Come near.

The Door Is Open

Good Friday reminds us:

The cross is not just where Jesus suffered.
It’s where Jesus loved.

He bore the full weight.
He gave the full measure.
He finished the full work.

And now the invitation stands:

Not “try harder.”
Not “fix yourself.”
Not “earn your way back.”

But simply this:

The door is open. Come home.
