Sermon Series Blog: Encounter Pt.12

THE EXODUS PT.2

One of the foundational points of this series is that an ENCOUNTER with God changes our perspective. It shifts our priorities. As humans, we are naturally self-focused—even as Christ-followers, we fall into the trap of making our relationship with God about me, me, me. We ask, Lord, what can You do for me? And when we don’t see an immediate answer, we become impatient.

But what we have seen throughout Scripture is that an ENCOUNTER with God moves us from self-centeredness to a GOD-centered purpose.

Last week, we explored Moses’ journey from captivity to calling. We saw his doubts, hesitations, and excuses, yet God empowered him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. We were reminded to trust in God’s plan, put on the armor of God, and walk in faith—because our God is not against us; He is in it with us!

And now, as we enter this Easter season, we rejoice because the victory is already won!

Who Am I?

Moses doubted himself. He asked God, Who am I? to take on such a calling. Maybe you’ve asked that question, too. You feel unqualified, overwhelmed, or full of excuses for why you can’t step into what God is calling you to do.

Our mission here in the downtown core is big. Many people don’t know Jesus, and many reject Him as the resurrected King. But God calls us to throw our doubts away and take a step of faith!

That leads us to today’s message: The effects of an ENCOUNTER with God.

Making a “Business Decision”

Has anyone ever made a business decision before? A decision that benefits you, but maybe not the bigger picture?

I remember playing basketball when a 6’7” bulky dude was charging down the lane. I had a choice: step in, take the charge, or step aside. I chose the second option—made a business decision—and my coach let me have it! He reminded me that we play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the one on the back.

How often do we do this in our faith?

  • The content we consumeIt’s just entertainment, it’s not hurting anyone!

  • Holding grudgesThey wronged me, so I’m done with them!

  • Turning down opportunities to serveMinistry doesn’t pay like corporate does!

Ask yourself: Where have I made a business decision in my faith? Where have I chosen self-interest over obedience to God?

The Bible is full of people making these decisions:

  • Jonah tried to flee instead of preaching in Nineveh.

  • Gideon focused on his weakness instead of God’s strength.

  • Saul followed his own zeal instead of God’s truth.

  • Samson chased his desires instead of his calling.

  • David took what wasn’t his instead of walking in righteousness.

  • Judas chose money over Jesus.

So, where are you making a business decision?

The Power of an ENCOUNTER

1. Obstacle

Moses was up against Pharaoh—the most powerful ruler in the world. Yet God demonstrated His authority through the 10 plagues, each targeting a false god the Egyptians worshipped. Every obstacle showed God’s power is greater than any opposition.

What obstacle are you facing? No challenge is greater than God’s power! He fights for you and will never forsake you.

2. Obedience

Many of our battles are spiritual (Ephesians 6:12). The Israelites struggled, Moses hesitated, but God remained faithful.

When we trust God to fight for us, victory is guaranteed.

3. Open Door

After Pharaoh let the Israelites go, he changed his mind and pursued them. They found themselves trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army.

Maybe you feel stuck—no way forward, no way back. What do you do?

  1. Go to prayer – Lay your struggles at the feet of Jesus.

  2. Remember God’s goodness – Thank Him in the midst of your trials.

Exodus 14:13-14 – "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today… The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."

When we trust God, He opens doors no one else can open.

Final Encouragement

If God is calling you to step out in faith—do it. If He is calling you to serve—say yes. If He is calling you to forgive—let go of the grudge. If He is calling you into ministry—follow Him.

Moses walked in obedience before seeing the full plan unfold.

Maybe that’s you today. Take the step. God is fighting for you!
