Under the Surface

Jesus sees beyond appearances and leads us back to the Father’s heart

When Fear Silences Faith

In John 7:10–24, Jerusalem is filled with conversation about Jesus. Some believe He is good; others think He is deceiving people. Everyone has an opinion, yet no one speaks openly because they fear the religious leaders.

Fear can make us whisper what we should confidently live. We may believe in Jesus privately but hesitate to follow Him publicly because we fear rejection.

Jesus does not expose fear to shame us. Peter once denied Jesus because he was afraid, but his failure was not the end of his story. Jesus restored him, and Peter later preached Christ publicly with boldness.

The same Jesus still restores fearful people today.

Surrender Brings Spiritual Clarity

When Jesus begins teaching, the people are amazed. He explains that His teaching comes from the Father. Then He says that anyone who chooses to do God’s will can recognize whether His teaching truly comes from God.

That order matters. We often want complete understanding before we obey. Jesus shows us that spiritual clarity frequently begins with surrender.

A good doctor tells the truth because healing matters more than comfort. In the same way, Jesus speaks truth—not to wound us, but to make us whole.

Jesus is not looking for admiration alone. He invites us to trust, obey, and follow Him.

Look Beneath the Surface

The religious leaders were angry because Jesus had healed a man on the Sabbath. They became so focused on protecting their interpretation of the law that they missed the Father’s heart behind it.

They looked at a healed man and saw a broken rule. Jesus looked at a broken man and brought healing.

This is the danger of shallow judgment: we can become technically right while being spiritually wrong. We can defend tradition yet lose compassion. Religious tradition does not get the final word. The Father’s heart does.

Jesus calls us to look beyond appearances and see people through God’s compassion and truth.

Drink From the Right Source

In 1854, cholera spread through London’s Soho district. Dr. John Snow traced the outbreak to the Broad Street water pump. People were thirsty, but the source they trusted was making them sick.

Our souls can do the same. We drink from public opinion, fear, approval, bitterness, comparison, and dry religion, hoping they will satisfy us. Instead, they leave us empty.

Jesus exposes what is beneath the surface because He loves us too much to leave us dry. He does not say, “Come to appearances,” or “Come to empty religion.” He says, “Come to Me.”

So ask yourself: What source have I been drinking from?

If fear has silenced your faith, come back to Jesus. If your heart has become critical instead of compassionate, come back to Jesus. If you look fine on the surface but feel dry underneath, come back to Jesus.

Jesus sees what is underneath—and He still invites you close. Come thirsty. Come honestly. Come to Jesus and drink.
